Back the bike for school

Back the bike for school

Parents in Knowsley are ditching the role of taxi driver to encourage their children to cycle to school.
A week of events is plugging the benefits of bikes as a way to get fit and reduce the traffic jams that can build up around schools.
Ten and eleven year olds at St Margaret Mary’s primary in Huyton have been doing their bit for the cause.
“Some parents worry if it’s safe or not for their kids to cycle to school,” said Paul Scully, assistant head at St Margaret Mary’s, who is co-ordinating the bike project.
“So we concentrate our efforts on the pupils who’ve completed the Cyclist Training programme through the school, that’s run by qualified instructors.
“This helps them to get to know the local roads and to learn how to stay safe, even in quite busy traffic.”
Paul says staff have noticed how a cycle ride to school seems to make the pupils more alert and ready to start work.
National research shows that children who are driven to school can spend up to two and a half hours a week in the car.

“For many children, cycling is simply more fun and more sociable than going to school by car," said Cllr David Lonergan, Knowsley’s Cabinet member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills.
“They love the feeling of freedom and giving the car a miss means less pollution and congestion around schools.
“We all know just how busy it can get at drop off and pick up times and cycling and walking are such simple alternatives.”
A number of events have been organised for Bike Week in Knowsley including a poster design competition, with mountain bikes for the winners, free bike maintenance checks and a joint bike and walking promotion at Evelyn primary.
To find out more about how your child can cycle to school in safety, contact Knowsley’s travel plan advisor, Joanne Spencer on 0151 443 2239.

Free Bikes!

Free Bikes!

The local Bike and Roll on Governors Island offers one hour of free biking on Fridays. There were a lot summer camp kids on the ferry with us and I didn't think they would line up for bikes, but they did. Thankfully there was a separate line and bikes for adults. The bikes didn't have clamp brakes, so you had to back pedal to stop. Needless to say, a lot of the kids had accidents, but nothing they couldn't walk away from. If you take a friend you can conceivably return the bikes and re-apply for another hour under a different name:)
